- Moderate alcohol. Heavy drinking lowers parameters and raises DNA fragmentation. Keep it well below 14 units a week with several alcohol-free days.
- Reduce scrotal heat. Skip hot tubs and saunas while trying to conceive, keep laptops off your lap, choose looser underwear, and take breaks from long sitting. A fever can lower sperm counts for a few months afterward.
- Never use testosterone or anabolic steroids for fertility. They suppress the brain's FSH and LH and can cause severe oligozoospermia or azoospermia; recovery after stopping takes 6 to 24 months and sometimes needs hCG or clomiphene. - Antioxidants — vitamin C (amla, citrus, capsicum, greens), vitamin E (nuts, seeds, oils), selenium (eggs, fish), and lycopene (tomatoes).
- Omega-3 fats — fatty fish, or algal supplements for vegetarians.
- Folate — leafy greens and legumes.
