What counts as a faint line?
A faint line is a visible second line at the test region (the T zone) that is clearly lighter than the control line (C) but still has real colour — pink or blue depending on the brand chemistry — with a clean, defined edge. As long as that colour is genuinely there within the manufacturer's reading window, the test is positive, even if you have to look closely to see it.
Line darkness mainly reflects how much hCG is in your urine at the moment you test. The antibodies in the strip bind hCG, and the more hCG that is present, the more of it collects at the test line and the darker that line looks. At a urinary hCG of roughly 25 to 50 mIU/mL (typical around 10 to 12 days after ovulation) the line is usually pale but visible. At 100 to 300 mIU/mL (around 14 to 16 days post ovulation, or two to three days after a missed period in a regular 28-day cycle) it is moderately dark. By 500 to 5,000 mIU/mL (about 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy) it is as dark as, or darker than, the control line.
Most home tests sold in India detect from 25 mIU/mL — Prega News, i-can, Velocit, Pregakem and Suchak all sit at that threshold — while Clearblue Early Detection picks up from 10 mIU/mL. A faint line right at a kit's threshold simply means you have caught the earliest detectable phase of hCG production, often 8 to 10 days after ovulation. Why you might see a faint line
There are a handful of common, reassuring reasons a line shows up faint.
You tested early. This is the usual explanation. hCG roughly doubles every 48 to 72 hours in the first 6 weeks, so the earlier you test relative to ovulation, the less hormone there is to colour the line. Around 9 days post ovulation hCG might be 10 to 25 mIU/mL; by 13 days it can be 50 to 200 mIU/mL. You used dilute urine. Testing in the afternoon after water, coconut water, buttermilk, tea or other fluids lowers the hCG concentration and fades the line — something worth remembering in the Indian summer when you are drinking a lot. Hold your urine for at least 4 hours and avoid large fluids in the 1 to 2 hours before testing to get the most sensitive result.
Trigger-shot residue from fertility treatment. If you had an Ovitrelle or Pregnyl injection in an IUI or IVF cycle, that trigger contains synthetic hCG that can linger in urine for 7 to 14 days. A faint line in that window may be leftover trigger rather than implantation, which is why clinics ask you to wait and confirm with a blood test.

Faint line vs evaporation line
An evaporation line is a colourless or grey shadow that develops at the test region after the reading window has passed — usually 15 to 60 minutes later. As urine dries on the strip, residual salts and protein concentrate along the test line and leave a mark that can look like a line but lacks the pink or blue colour of a true positive.
Three features tell them apart:
- Timing — evaporation lines appear after the reading window; true faint positives appear within it.
- Colour — evaporation lines are colourless, grey or faintly tan; true positives are pink or blue.
- Texture — evaporation lines are often very thin, streaky or uneven; true positives have measurable thickness and clean edges.
The practical rule, consistent with ACOG, the US FDA and FOGSI patient counselling, is to read the test only within the manufacturer's window — for most Indian brands, 5 to 10 minutes. Set a phone timer when you start, read at the timer, photograph the result immediately, and ignore whatever the strip shows half an hour or two hours later.

The most informative pattern is two beta-hCG readings 48 hours apart. A rise under 53%, a plateau or a fall points to an abnormal pregnancy and warrants a transvaginal ultrasound to check for ectopic, missed miscarriage, chemical pregnancy or early pregnancy failure.
For IVF and IUI patients, the first beta-hCG is usually scheduled 11 to 14 days after embryo transfer or trigger, with a repeat 48 hours later. A value below 5 mIU/mL means the cycle did not result in pregnancy; above 25 mIU/mL with appropriate doubling means a clinical pregnancy, and a first-trimester scan is booked around 7 weeks. Chemical pregnancy and faint lines
A chemical pregnancy is a very early loss that happens before the pregnancy is visible on ultrasound — typically before 5 to 6 weeks. Implantation begins, hCG is produced for a few days, then the embryo stops developing and is reabsorbed or passed with a period that arrives a few days late and is sometimes heavier or crampier than usual. These are common; many go entirely unnoticed because most women do not test that early.
The classic picture is a faint positive (often on a high-sensitivity early-detection brand), a darkening line for 1 to 3 days, then a plateau or fading line, then a slightly late period. On serial beta-hCG the values may rise at first but fail to double, then fall.
A single chemical pregnancy is not treated as a sign of an underlying fertility problem and is not investigated further by ACOG, RCOG, NICE or FOGSI — the usual advice is simply to try again the next cycle. Recurrent chemical pregnancies (two or more in a row) may warrant investigation for thrombophilia, antiphospholipid syndrome, thyroid dysfunction, uterine anatomical issues or chromosomal causes.
Emotionally, this can be hard, especially after many cycles of trying. A faint line on its own is not a worry — it is a real positive that simply needs follow-up. But certain symptoms or circumstances do call for urgent gynaecology assessment, ideally somewhere with transvaginal ultrasound available.
Go in promptly, or to an emergency room, if a positive test comes with:
- Sharp, stabbing or aching pain on one side of the lower abdomen — a red flag for ectopic pregnancy until proven otherwise.
- Pain that radiates to the shoulder tip (from blood irritating the diaphragm).
- Vaginal bleeding, from brown spotting to bright red, especially with cramping.
- Dizziness, fainting or feeling like you might pass out — possible signs of internal bleeding from a ruptured tube, and a medical emergency.
Some women carry a higher prior risk of ectopic: a previous ectopic, prior tubal surgery, an IUD in place, or current pelvic inflammatory disease. For them, a faint positive should prompt an early beta-hCG and scan. Photographing and documenting faint lines
Many women photograph a faint line for their own reference, to compare with later tests, or to show their doctor. The best technique is to shoot under bright, even, natural daylight (a north-facing window works well) within the reading window. Hold the camera directly above and parallel to the test to avoid shadows that mimic extra lines, and use a plain white background.
Do not edit, filter or enhance the photo. Many phone apps automatically add contrast and saturation that can make a faint — or even imaginary — line look more prominent. If you share it with a doctor or partner, send the unedited original. The inverted or negative filter some people use to spot a line can help, but interpret it cautiously, since inversion also exaggerates artefacts.

Faint lines in IVF and IUI cycles
Faint lines in assisted reproduction need a slightly different lens because of the trigger shot. In IUI cycles and most fresh IVF cycles, an Ovitrelle (choriogonadotropin alfa) or Pregnyl (urinary hCG) trigger is given to mature follicles before insemination or retrieval. When home testing is done anyway, the trend over consecutive days is informative: trigger residue produces a line that fades day by day as the hormone clears, while true implantation produces a line that darkens as the placenta makes more hCG.
