These can sometimes reflect neurological, orthopaedic or muscular conditions that benefit from paediatric assessment, possibly with a paediatric neurologist or orthopaedic specialist. Walking alongside other developmental concerns: a baby who walks at nine months but is not babbling, not making eye contact, not interested in social interaction, not feeding well, or has poor head control may be showing a broader atypical pattern rather than just early motor development. The IAP framework looks at the full developmental picture, and any concern across other domains should prompt a full developmental assessment.
Loss of previously achieved milestones is always a red flag at any age. A baby who was walking and stops, loses balance they previously had, or regresses in motor skill needs prompt assessment to rule out neurological, infectious or metabolic causes. The same applies to language and social regression. Sudden regression always needs assessment and should never be brushed off as a phase.
Frequent unexplained falls in a child who was previously walking confidently may point to vision problems (cannot see obstacles), inner-ear or balance problems, muscular problems or neurological issues. Routine clumsiness in a new walker is normal; persistent unusual falls in a previously stable child warrant a paediatrician visit.
Asymmetric movement is a flag. - Fact: The brain regions and timetables driving early gross motor development are partly separate from those driving later cognitive development, and one does not predict the other.
- Fact: Future intelligence, school performance and adult achievement depend on many factors (genetics, nutrition, environment, education, opportunity) far more than on the timing of the first steps.
- Fact: The cultural celebration of early walking as a sign of intelligence is well-meaning but not supported by developmental research; it can create unhelpful pressure on later-walking babies and their families.
- Fact: Equally, late walking within the normal range does not predict lower intelligence; many children who walk at fifteen or sixteen months go on to outstanding academic and intellectual outcomes.
Myth: A baby walker helps the baby learn to walk faster
- Fact: Baby walkers do not strengthen the muscles needed for independent walking and have been shown in studies to either have no effect on walking age or to slightly delay it by reducing floor time.
- Fact: The AAP, the IAP, the Canadian Paediatric Society (which supports their ban) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health all recommend against baby walker use.
- Fact: Baby walkers cause significant injuries every year in India, primarily from falls down stairs but also from burns, poisoning and reach-related injuries; the speed of movement and the height-and-reach the walker enables outpaces the baby's judgement.
- Fact: Push toys (which the baby pushes from behind while walking upright) are a different category and can be useful in the cruising-to-walking transition; they are not the same as a baby walker.
- Fact: The best supports for learning to walk are floor time for cruising practice, safe furniture arrangement for cruising paths, barefoot time on safe surfaces, and patient watching while the baby develops the skill at their own pace.
- Fact: If a walker has been gifted by family, harm-reduction approaches include no stairs anywhere on the floor, direct adult supervision, short sessions only, and stopping use once independent walking begins.
Myth: Babies should wear hard supportive shoes as soon as they start walking
- Fact: Paediatric podiatry guidance is that barefoot time on safe surfaces best supports foot development, arch formation, balance and proprioception in new walkers, and that hard supportive shoes can interfere with this.
- Fact: The first shoes should be soft, flexible, lightweight, with a sole that bends in the hand, a wide toe box, no significant arch support, and a secure fit; they should be worn primarily for outdoor walking and not constantly indoors.
- Fact: Non-slip socks or soft booties indoors are acceptable when the floor is cold or smooth; standard socks without grip soles on smooth tile floors are a slip-and-fall hazard for new walkers.
- Fact: Indian toddler shoe options at roughly ₹400 to ₹2,000 from brands like Bata Bubblegummers, Crocs Kids, Mothercare and FirstCry house brands meet the soft flexible criteria; expensive formal toddler shoes that look smart but are stiff are not better and may be worse for foot development.

Myth: Falls during early walking can cause permanent brain damage
- Fact: The vast majority of falls during early walking produce no injury or only minor injury (bumps, bruises, brief crying) and require no specific action beyond comfort.
- Fact: The toddler skull and brain are designed for the routine bumps of learning to move; the rare falls that cause serious injury are usually from significant heights (balconies, stairs) or onto hard sharp surfaces, which is why environmental childproofing is the priority.
- Fact: Specific red flags after a fall that warrant medical assessment include loss of consciousness, vomiting more than once, persistent inconsolable crying, unusual sleepiness, asymmetric pupils, weakness on one side, or behaviour clearly out of character.
- Fact: The forehead egg-bump that looks alarming after a routine fall is typically benign and resolves over a week or two; ice in the first hours reduces swelling.

Frequently asked questions
Is it good or bad if my baby walks before 12 months?
It is neither; it is simply normal. The WHO normal range for first steps runs from about 9 to 17 months. Walking before 10 months is statistically uncommon but medically fine, and it does not predict higher intelligence or better athletic ability. The one practical implication is that your baby's mobility now outpaces their sense of danger, so childproofing and close supervision become urgent.
Should I buy shoes the moment my baby starts walking?
No. Bare feet on safe surfaces best support arch development and balance. Indoors, use soft non-slip socks or flexible booties if the floor is cold or smooth. Buy soft, flexible, lightweight shoes only for outdoor walking on rough or hot surfaces, and re-check the fit every two to four months because toddler feet grow quickly.
Do baby walkers help my baby walk sooner?
No. Baby walkers do not help and may slightly delay walking by reducing floor time, and they cause serious injuries, especially falls down stairs.
