Understanding Growth Percentiles

What are growth percentiles?

Growth percentiles show how your baby's measurements compare to others of the same age and sex. A baby at the 50th percentile is exactly average.

A baby at the 50th percentile is right in the middle — half of babies weigh more, half weigh less.

When should I be concerned?

A single measurement is less important than the trend over time. Your baby's growth pattern should follow a consistent percentile curve.

When to consult your doctor

  • A sudden drop across two or more percentile lines
  • Measurements consistently below the 3rd or above the 97th percentile
  • A significant mismatch between weight and length percentiles
  • Your baby seems unwell, is not feeding properly, or is losing weight

Growth Milestones

Key growth milestones to look out for in the first two years of life.

Birth to 3 Months

0–3 months

Babies typically gain 150–200g per week. Birth weight is usually regained by 10–14 days, and doubles by around 4–5 months.

3 to 6 Months

3–6 months

Weight gain slows slightly to about 100–150g per week. Length increases by about 2 cm per month. Head growth is steady.

6 to 12 Months

6–12 months

Weight gain continues to slow as baby becomes more active. Birth weight typically triples by 12 months. Solid foods are introduced.

12 to 24 Months

12–24 months

Growth rate slows further. Toddlers gain about 2–3 kg and 10–12 cm in their second year. Head growth begins to plateau.
