What amniotic fluid is and what it does

Amniotic fluid is the clear, slightly yellow liquid filling the sac around your baby. Early in pregnancy it forms by water crossing the membranes and the baby's still-thin skin, so its make-up is close to your own body fluid. From around 16 weeks, as the kidneys mature, the baby's urine becomes the main source — by term a baby passes roughly 500–700 ml of urine a day into the sac, with the fetal lungs adding a smaller amount.

The volume stays steady because fluid is removed as fast as it is made. The baby swallows fluid (around 500–1000 ml a day near term) and absorbs it through the gut, and more is reabsorbed across the membranes and placenta. The fluid does a lot of quiet work. The single deepest vertical pocket (DVP, also called the single deepest pocket or maximum vertical pocket) skips the quadrants. The sonographer scans the whole uterus, finds the one deepest pocket of fluid free of cord and baby's parts — anywhere it lies — and measures its vertical depth. The pocket should be at least 1 cm wide.

Myth: drinking lots of water will fix low fluid
