First Trimester

Weeks 1-12

  • Complete blood count (CBC)

  • Thyroid panel (TSH)
  • First ultrasound (dating scan)

Common Symptoms

  • Morning sickness & nausea
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Breast tenderness
  • Frequent urination
  • Mood swings
  • Food aversions or cravings

Nutrition Focus

  • Folic acid (400-800 mcg/day)
  • Iron-rich foods (green leafy vegetables, jaggery)
  • Small, frequent meals to manage nausea
  • Stay hydrated - aim for 8-10 glasses daily
  • Avoid raw papaya, pineapple, and unwashed produce

Second Trimester

Weeks 13-26

Key Tests

  • Anomaly scan (18-22 weeks)
  • Quadruple marker test
  • Glucose tolerance test / GDM screening (24-28 wks)
  • Haemoglobin check
  • Urine for protein & sugar

Common Symptoms

  • Growing belly & weight gain
  • Back pain & round ligament pain
  • Skin changes (linea nigra, melasma)
  • Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Nasal congestion
  • Increased appetite

Nutrition Focus

  • Calcium-rich foods (milk, ragi, paneer)
  • Protein: dal, eggs, lean chicken
  • Omega-3 (walnuts, flaxseed)
  • Fibre for constipation (whole grains, fruits)
  • Vitamin D (safe sun exposure)

Third Trimester

Weeks 27-40

  • Growth scan (32-34 weeks)
  • Non-stress test (NST) from 36 wks
  • Group B Streptococcus swab (35-37 wks)
  • Biophysical profile if needed
  • Weekly check-ups from 36 weeks

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Heartburn & indigestion
  • Swollen feet & ankles
  • Insomnia & frequent urination
  • Braxton Hicks intensify
  • Pelvic pressure & lightning crotch

Nutrition Focus

  • Iron supplements (as prescribed)
  • DHA for baby's brain (fish oil or algae)
  • Dates (6 per day from 36 wks - may ease labour)
  • Potassium-rich foods for cramps (bananas, coconut water)
  • Prepare healthy freezer meals for postpartum
