41 weeks pregnant: Late term, extra monitoring

Here is what to expect this week for you and your baby.

Baby Size Large watermelon (tarbooz) 51.5 cm Baby is full size, ~52 cm. Monitoring increases.

Baby Development

  • Baby is post-term — still growing but space is tight
  • Fingernails may extend past fingertips
  • Vernix and lanugo mostly gone — skin may be dry
  • Baby healthy but monitoring increases

Common Symptoms

  • Very uncomfortable — ready to deliver
  • Strong Braxton Hicks or early labour contractions
  • Cervical changes progressing
  • Emotional frustration and impatience

  • Stay calm — many healthy babies arrive at 41 weeks
  • Gentle walks and nipple stimulation may help induce labour
  • Rest and conserve energy for the big day

When to see your doctor at week 41

Some symptoms need attention right away. Contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital if you notice any of these:

  • Heavy bleeding (soaking a pad within an hour)
  • Severe or persistent abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
  • Sudden severe headache, blurred vision or upper-abdominal pain (possible preeclampsia)
  • Decreased fetal movement after week 24 (fewer than 10 movements in 2 hours)
  • Watery fluid leak from the vagina before 37 weeks (possible PPROM)
  • Regular contractions before 37 weeks (possible preterm labour)
