Kind words for when fasting isn’t safe.

A fast is a choice, not an obligation your body owes anyone. If pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, low blood pressure, migraine or any medical condition is in the picture, skipping or modifying the fast is caring for your family, not failing it. Pick a line, make it yours.

What to say

To an elder who expects a full fast

“I’m keeping the spirit of the day fully — the prayer, the puja, the togetherness. This year my doctor has asked me to eat and drink through it, so I’ll be doing a modified fast.”

When pregnant or breastfeeding

“I’m carrying/feeding for two right now, so going without water isn’t safe for the baby. I’ll do the rituals and keep small sips and food through the day.”

Living with diabetes or low BP

“My blood sugar/pressure drops if I don’t eat, and that’s risky. I’ll follow the puja fully and eat lightly so I can be present for all of it.”

To a partner, as a team

“Can we plan today so I can rest and eat when I need to? I want to enjoy the evening with you, not spend it dizzy.”

When someone pushes back

“I hear you, and I’m not stepping away from the day — only from the part that my health won’t allow this year. I hope you’ll support that.”

If you do fast, do it safely

  • Eat a filling, slow-energy sargi (whole grains, protein, fruit) before dawn.
  • Break the fast gently — water first, then something light.
  • Stop immediately for dizziness, a pounding heart, cramps or feeling faint.
  • Keep any regular medicine on schedule unless your doctor says otherwise.

This sheet is general information, not medical advice. If you’re unsure whether fasting is safe for you, ask a clinician — a two-minute chat on SHELY Care counts.
